Iron: Dragon's Eye Sixth Anniversary

de6010

de6010 cover

Description:

The release of Iron marks the sixth anniversary of Yann Novak relaunching Dragon’s Eye Recordings, the record label originally created by his father Paul Novak in 1989.  In previous years, this anniversary compilation has been a chance to look forward to the coming year of artists and releases. With Iron, we will be looking backward at the previous 6 years.

For Iron, artists featured on Dragon’s Eye were asked to contribute either a solo piece or a collaboration with another Dragon’s Eye artist.  The results came together as a  massive free download compilation, consisting of 24 artists, on 20 tracks and over 2 1/2 hours of sound.  The compilation came together as a perfect mix of the styles and voices featured on Dragon’s Eye over the last 6 years.

A New Stage for Dragon's Eye Recordings

The release of the Iron sixth anniversary compilation marks a new stage for Dragon's Eye as I will be going on hiatus from releasing new editions in 2012 and possibly beyond.  I will keep the label active by selling all our current titles through the site and promoting the artists I have featured via Facebook and other social media, but no new physical editions will be issued.  One of the other ways I will keep Dragon's Eye active is to slowly make our entire catalogue available digitally with the goal of having all editions available by the end of 2012.  So each month a previous release will be made available, starting in February with Kamran Sadeghi's Through Thickness and ending in December with Ælab's Riding.

Over the past 6 years Dragon's Eye has grown and changed beyond my wildest dreams.  I re-launched the label in 2005 as a way to meet new people and build community in Seattle, but after our first two releases received glowing reviews from the Wire I knew it was going to grow beyond my expectations.  Starting with CD-R editions of 100 the labels popularity grew to warrant a few CD editions of 500 before settling back in to CD-R editions of 200.  Overall 60 editions were issues as CD-Rs, CDs and digital releases. Through the years Dragon's Eye saw numerous of its editions go out of print in mere weeks.  In 2009 Textura, the online magazine in Canada named Dragon's Eye one of their 'Top Ten Favorite Labels' and in 2010 received label profiles by Tokafi in Germany and Headphone Commute in the US.

This decision did not come easily. I love working on Dragon's Eye and with all its wonderful artists, and I look forward to continuing once I find the time.  I had to make this decision due to my own studio practice becoming very demanding in the last year and it promises to be even more demanding in 2012.  Already in the first few months of 2012 I will produce two new collaborative performances here in Los Angeles, open a new solo exhibition in Seattle, be included in three group exhibitions in California, Ireland and Japan and finally do a short west coast tour of 6 channel surround performances.

During the hiatus I hope you will continue to follow Dragon's Eye and its artists via the Dragon's Eye site and Facebook.  If you are curious about the the upcoming events and projects in my studio practice that have contributed to the hiatus, I would be honored if you signed up for my Newsletter , became a fan on Facebook, or just checked out my site.

Thank you all for your continued interest and support in all the artistic endeavors of our little Dragon's Eye family.

Happy new year!

Yann Novak
